ANACOSTIA SENIOR SCHOOL HISTORY


The original name of Anacostia was Nacotchitanke which means “town of trades”

Timeline of the Early Years

  • 1935 ­ Anacostia Junior/Senior High opened up and only accommodated eighth and ninth graders
  • 1937 ­ Tenth through twelfth grades were included
  • 1943 ­ Kramer Junior High was built leaving Anacostia as a Senior High School
  • 1949 ­ 7 new classrooms added on the third floor
  • 1955 ­ An 8 room building, the Ketchum Annex, was added (now torn down)
  • 1958 ­ 17 rooms were added 1959 - $100,000 gym opened
